Sag Harbor Village Police Reports for the Week of June 6

SAG HARBOR VILLAGE — On the morning of May 28 and again on Friday morning, police were sent to Glover Street after a caller complained that there was a car that apparently had been abandoned there. Police checked the car’s registration on May 28 and found that it was active. A traffic control officer chalk-marked a tire to ensure that the car was in fact being used. On Friday, the same caller made the same complaint. A TCO again chalked the tires to make sure that the car was not being parked in the same spot for longer than seven ... 5 Jun 2024 by Staff Writer

A few months ago, The Express News Group tackled a project to discuss the past, present and future of the college campus in Shinneco*ck Hills, now Stony Brook Southampton. One big conclusion: The college there has had its struggles ever since the first Southampton College opened its doors in the fall of 1963. Put another way: If it weren’t for bad luck, that college would have no luck at all. And so, in the late spring of 2024, comes the latest bit of bad news: Stony Brook University President Dr. Maurie D. McInnis will be leaving shortly to become the ... by Editorial Board

Pride and Joy

A good event gains steam quickly from year to year. But few events have the trajectory of the Hamptons Pride Parade, which began strong with more than 1,000 participants and spectators in 2022 and has only gotten bigger in the two years since, including Saturday’s parade in East Hampton. Tom House, the Bridgehampton School educator who is president of the nonprofit Hamptons Pride, has made it his mission to preserve the South Fork’s long history of tolerance and support for the LGBTQ+ community. The parade is a visible reminder, a party of sorts, but there’s a lot of hard work ... by Editorial Board

As a member of the John Jermain Library Board, I am responding to the article “Sag Harbor Planners Set Hearing on John Jermain Memorial Library’s Heating System” [27east.com, May 29]. The library installed an open geothermal system, as there was insufficient room for a closed system. The board began discussions on the geothermal HVAC system in 2016, because the system never operated optimally. The library spent many hundreds of thousands of dollars on remediation and two engineering studies. Both said the system needs replacing due to biofilm infiltration and a collapsed geothermal well. Another geothermal system is unfeasible. The board ... by Staff Writer

The Moment of Disturbance

The soundtrack plays wherever you go. It isn’t composed of a playlist, songs that you or a friend have chosen, but a noise you cannot suppress. Sometimes it’s earth-moving equipment, other times it’s birdsong. Birdsong being the preferred and most varied. Right now, the bamboo is alive with the sound of grackles. Dozens upon dozens take refuge here, a rookery of choice not just for them but for other birds, too. The fast-growing forest is so dense that four-legged and winged predators alike cannot quickly navigate the bamboo, and small, winged birds are at an advantage once they are inside ... by Marilee Foster
