The US is on the brink of a nuclear energy breakthrough, with the final safety evaluation for TerraPower's Kemmerer Power Station in Wyoming completed ahead of schedule. But this isn't just any reactor; it's a bold step into the future of energy.
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has meticulously reviewed TerraPower's application to construct a cutting-edge Natrium reactor plant in Lincoln County, Wyoming. This reactor showcases the Natrium sodium-cooled fast reactor technology, featuring a molten salt energy storage system that allows for flexible energy supply to the grid.
In a surprising turn of events, the NRC completed this evaluation a month ahead of their already expedited timeline, aiming to streamline the licensing process for advanced reactors. The NRC's staff initiated the formal review in May 2024, initially targeting August 2026 for completion. However, they ambitiously accelerated the process, aiming to finish by the end of 2024.
Here's where it gets intriguing: this is the first time the NRC has employed a fully risk-informed, performance-based (RIPB) approach to establish the licensing foundation for a commercial power reactor. No safety concerns stand in the way of issuing the construction permit.

The NRC's Environmental Impact Statement, assessing the proposed plant's environmental effects, was finalized in October. Now, the licensing process enters its climactic phase, where the Commission will decide if the staff's review justifies issuing the permit. Subsequently, the commissioners will vote on authorizing the staff to grant the permit.
TerraPower's President and CEO, Chris Levesque, celebrated this milestone, emphasizing the NRC's safety evaluation as a culmination of years of meticulous work and collaboration. However, the journey isn't over yet. If approved, the license will only permit construction; TerraPower's subsidiary, US SFR Owner, LLC, must apply for a separate operating license before commencing operations. Meanwhile, construction of the non-nuclear parts of the site is already underway.
