Get ready for a wild weather ride across New Zealand's North Island! From intense rainfall to blustery winds and thunderstorms, it's a dramatic forecast.
Nature's Fury Unveiled
The MetService has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Auckland, predicting heavy downpours. But here's where it gets controversial: some areas might experience even more extreme weather conditions.
A heavy rain warning is in effect from 11 am to 11 pm on Wednesday for Bay of Plenty and Gisborne, with potential thunderstorms and downpours. MetService has also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for specific regions like the Gulf, Kaipara, and Auckland City.
At 3.22 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected near several locations, moving southeast. By 4.22 pm, these storms are expected to reach Auckland and its surroundings, bringing very heavy rain and potential flooding.
The Impact and Concerns
MetService emphasizes the risk of surface and flash flooding, especially in streams, gullies, and urban areas. Driving conditions could become extremely hazardous. And this is the part most people miss: even a slight chance of a tornado is possible, according to MetService.
Meanwhile, a tornado was reported in rural Manawatū, causing damage to a motor camp and injuring at least one person. Emergency services are responding to the situation.
Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane highlights the notable warning for Bay of Plenty, expecting 80 to 120 mm of rain before the day's end. With thunderstorms, we might experience intense, short-duration rainfall, leading to potential flooding, slips, and challenging driving conditions.
The Weather's Evolution
Thunderstorms are also expected in Taranaki and Whanganui. A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for a large part of the North Island from 1 pm to 6 pm on Wednesday, with the potential for localized downpours, large hail, and strong winds.
Northerly winds are forecast to shift to southwesterly, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Heavy rain watches are active throughout the day for various regions, including Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel Peninsula.
Strong wind watches are also in place for several areas, including Northland, Auckland, and parts of the Tararua and Hawke's Bay districts. In the South Island, heavy rain and strong wind watches are active for the Kaikōura Coast and Chatham Islands.
There's a chance of thunderstorms in Central Otago on Wednesday afternoon or evening, and wind watches are in place for Marlborough and parts of Nelson from 5 pm Wednesday to 3 am Thursday.
Makgabutlane predicts an improvement in weather conditions from Thursday onwards.
