These breakfast sandwiches serve a small crowd and take minimal effort to put together.

Sometimes, I’m really indecisive. Especially when it comes to food choices. Take breakfast and brunch for instance. Sometimes all I want is something sweet like this overnight cherry French toast bake. Other times? Savory is where it’s at for me.

But then there are those times when I just can’t pick. Do I want a sweet breakfast treat like French toast or something savory like an egg dish?

I can’t start a day with such decisions looming over my head.

Monte Cristo Style Breakfast Sliders (3)

These Monte Cristo style breakfast sliders take that decision away. They hit all the notes: sweet, savory, delicious.

And did I mention these Monte Cristo style breakfast sliders are so easy. If you can make a grilled cheese you can make these sandwiches. More or less, they are grilled ham and cheese sandwiches but dipped in an egg batter so you get that delicious French toast effect too.

All you have to do to put them together? Cut a dozen sweet Hawaiian rolls in half. Slather dijon mustard on the inside of each roll and layer them with thickly sliced deli ham and deliciously buttery gruyere cheese. To make it pretty, trim the ham and cheese to fit neatly inside the roll. Then top with the top half of the bun.

When the sandwiches are assembled, beat together the eggs and the milk in a small bowl. Dip the top and bottom of each sandwich into the egg batter. Don’t soak the sandwiches in the batter though. You don’t want the inside of the sandwich to get soggy.

Once you dip the sandwiches in the batter, it’s pretty much the same as making grilled cheese. Just spray a skillet with nonstick spray and cook the sandwiches over medium low to medium heat the way you would cook a grilled cheese. Using lower heat allows the cheese to melt, the egg batter to cook and the sandwich to warm through without burning the rolls. Only cook the sandwich until the cheese melts and the bread is lightly golden, flipping once to cook both sides of the sliders.

To finish these yummy sliders dust them with powdered sugar and serve with raspberry preserves or jam for dipping. Then sit back and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 dozen Sweet Hawaiian Rolls
  • Thick Deli Sliced Ham
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Gruyere Cheese sliced
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • Raspberry Preserve for dipping
  • Powdered Sugar for garnish

Instructions

  • Start by cutting each dinner roll in half.

  • Spread a generous amount of dijon mustard on the inside of each half.

  • Add several pieces of ham and gruyere cheese to the bottom half of the roll. ( I cut my ham and cheese to fit my roll.)

  • Place the top half back on to make a sandwich.

  • Next beat together your eggs and milk in a small bowl.

  • Dip the bottom half and top half of your slider in the egg mixture. Do not let it soak and get soggy.

  • Spray a heated skillet with non stick spray.

  • Grill your slider just as you would a grilled cheese. Until golden on both sides.

  • Top with powdered sugar.

  • If you prefer you can place the slider in a greased baking dish, and bake until golden and cheese is melted. Just skip dipping them in the egg mixture.

  • Serve and enjoy!
