Japan and Canada: A Beacon of Stability in a Turbulent World

Since assuming the role of Japan's Foreign Minister, I've had the privilege of engaging in significant international conferences, including ASEAN and APEC. Now, I'm excited to attend the G7 foreign ministers' meeting, where we'll delve into the complexities of our evolving global landscape. One of the key focuses will be our collaboration with Canada, especially in the energy sector.
The current global security environment is a cause for concern. From Russia's invasion of Ukraine to the turmoil in the Middle East, and the notable developments in the Indo-Pacific region, the world is facing unprecedented challenges. China's actions, North Korea's nuclear ambitions, and the growing cooperation between these nations are all issues that demand our attention.
However, amidst these turbulent times, Japan and Canada emerge as stable democracies, offering a glimmer of hope. Just as a compass needle points true north, even in a storm, these nations' commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law remains unwavering.
Our partnership is built on shared values and a common vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. In 2021, we announced six priority areas of cooperation, and since then, we've made significant strides. From the port call of a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker to Japan to the signing of crucial agreements, our efforts are bearing fruit.
In an era of increasing economic uncertainty, Japan and Canada are committed to upholding a rules-based economic order. Through initiatives like the CPTPP, we're working together to ensure a free and fair global marketplace.
One of the most tangible symbols of our cooperation is in the energy sector. The LNG Canada project, involving Japanese companies, is a flagship of our energy partnership. Additionally, Japan is participating in Canada's small modular reactor project, an initiative under Prime Minister Mark Carney's "energy superpower" vision.
Our collaboration extends beyond energy. Within the G7 framework, we're working together to diversify critical mineral supplies and strengthen supply chains. Canada's leadership in maritime security, including the launch of the "shadow fleet" task force, is another area where our nations are aligned.
Japan and Canada share a unique bond, underpinned by our commitment to upholding the rule of law and a free international order. As we approach the 100th anniversary of our diplomatic relations in 2028, our friendship, built on mutual prosperity and global stability, is a testament to the power of cooperation.
