A tragedy has unfolded in Istanbul, leaving a family devastated and authorities scrambling for answers. A German-Turkish mother and her two young children have died under mysterious circumstances, prompting a full-scale investigation and the evacuation of a hotel in the heart of the city. Reports indicate that the family, on holiday from Hamburg, began experiencing symptoms of suspected poisoning. Sadly, the two children, aged just 3 and 6, succumbed to the illness, followed by their mother. The father remains in critical condition.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, two other tourists staying at the same hotel in Istanbul's Fatih neighborhood were also hospitalized with similar symptoms of nausea and vomiting.
What do we know about the investigation so far?
While the initial focus has been on food poisoning, investigators have discovered something else that raises serious questions: a ground-floor room in the hotel had recently been sprayed with chemicals, likely pesticides. This has led to the detention of a hotel employee and two pest control workers. Furthermore, a baker working near the hotel has also been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests in connection with the deaths to eight.
When questioned, one of the hotel owners stated that the hotel did not have a restaurant and only provided water to its guests. Forensic investigators have already taken samples of the drinking water for analysis.
Food poisoning: the primary suspect?
The family reportedly consumed a variety of foods before falling ill. These included stuffed mussels from a street vendor, soup, and kokorec (a dish made from calf intestines) from another shop. They also purchased Turkish delight, water, and, according to reports, chicken. The family was first admitted to the hospital after the children began experiencing nausea and vomiting. Initially discharged, all four family members were readmitted when the children's condition worsened overnight.
The children and mother were buried in a town in the western Turkish province of Afyonkarahisar. Among those arrested are four street food vendors.
